Trumpet Professor conducts Masterclasses and Recital in Italy

Neil Mueller, a Professor of Trumpet at CMU, served as a visiting artist at the Trento Conservatory of Music in Trento, Italy, from May 12th-15th.

During his visit, he conducted masterclasses for the conservatory's students and collaborated in a recital alongside pianist Francesca Carola and trumpeter Ivano Ascari, who holds the position of Professor of Trumpet at the conservatory. Among the repertoire, Mueller showcased “River of Time,” composed by David Biedenbender, a CMU School of Music alumnus and native of Mount Pleasant, who currently leads the composition program at Michigan State University. This piece was specifically written for Mueller and premiered with the Lansing Symphony in 2024.

During his time in northern Italy, Mueller had the opportunity to explore the instrument collection at the Accademia Filarmonica di Verona, where he examined a trumpet crafted for Cesare Bendinelli, the author of the first treatise on trumpet performance. This trumpet, one of just two in existence, was created in 1585.
