Do you have a hard-to-buy-for CMU alum on your holiday shopping list?

Get them a unique gift from the world’s only peer-reviewed game press run right here at Central Michigan University. Central Michigan University Press and the Center for Learning through Games and Simulations publish beautifully designed, intellectually engaging games that inspire creativity, collaboration, and reflection.

Each title below is created or developed in partnership with CMU faculty and offers something special for the gamer, educator, or lifelong learner in your life.

How would you live if time were a lie?

Five Hundred Year Old Vampire turns players into immortal storytellers. Inspired by the award-winning Thousand-Year-Old Vampire, this collaborative journaling RPG has players documenting centuries of life through writing and the creation of artifacts—letters, sketches, mementos—guided by storytelling prompt cards.

It’s perfect for writers, RPG fans, and history buffs who enjoy emotional, creative storytelling. The game also works beautifully in classrooms and aligns with national writing and visual arts standards. Available in print or as a “Print and Play” PDF, it includes a companion curriculum guide and optional expansions such as Beguiling Whispers, Liber Generis Sui, and The Cracked Mirror.

Is art ever worth dying for?

In this single-session live-action game, players become villagers in occupied France facing an impossible decision: destroy their church to save lives, or risk everything to preserve the artwork inside. Conversation, debate, and a final vote determine the outcome—there’s no script, just human judgment.

Monumental Consequence blends history, ethics, and drama, making it excellent for classrooms, team-building sessions, or a memorable game night. The card art, created by CMU alumnus Bill Spytma, adds a meaningful CMU connection.

Can you control the water cycle?

Hydrologic Cycle is a fast-paced card game where players control Earth’s water cycle. Build reservoirs, move water through natural systems, and out-strategize your opponents in either one-on-one or two-on-two play.

Designed by CMU professor Dr. Wendy Robertson, the game teaches real environmental science concepts while staying competitive and fun. A “Print and Play” version and a curriculum guide make it ideal for families, educators, or anyone who loves strategy games with real-world relevance.

Three young women gather around a table and review the game components for Hydrologic Cycle. They are holding cards and an instruction sheet. The game board sits in front of them.
CMU students test their strategy skills while playing Hydrologic Cycle, a fast-paced card game created by faculty and published by CMich Press.

Give the gift that’s two gifts

CMich Press isn’t just about what’s available now; it’s about what’s next. While there’s no active crowdfunding campaign now, CMich Press will hold a holiday sale from Nov. 18 to Dec. 2 on BackerKit, featuring discounted bundles of Five Hundred Year Old Vampire and Monumental Consequence.

And if you want to go the extra mile, consider preordering a future title. Print the preorder confirmation, tuck it in a card, and surprise your gift recipient all over again when the game ships. It’s a holiday encore in the making.
