Recognizing excellence in journalism

Department celebrates the achievements of outstanding alumni


​The Central Michigan University Journalism Hall of Fame will recognize the accomplishments of four alumni and honor the Central Michigan Life staff members from 1986 to 1987 on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Courtyard Marriot​.​

"The Hall of Fame honors the outstanding accomplishments of our extended journalism family," Director of Student Publications Dave Clark said.

Alumni to be recognized include:

  • John Gonzalez — Gonzalez is a statewide entertainment and travel reporter for MLive Media Group. He attended CMU from 1983 to 1988.
  • Jim Hughes, '79 — Hughes is the executive director of the Caring Athletes Team for Children's and Henry Ford hospitals. 
  • John McDonald, '79 — McDonald founded the crisis management communications consultancy Caeli Communications LLC.
  • Kathy Simon, '81 — Simon has been the assistant director of student media at CM Life for the past 16 years, growing the organization into an award-winning media and marketing services company.

 Jake May, a photographer at the Flint Journal, will receive the Young Journalist of the Year award.

The CMU Journalism Hall of Fame was created in 2002 by the journalism alumni board, department faculty, former College of Communication and Fine Arts Dean Sue Ann Martin, and former CMU President Michael Rao.
