A new journey begins
Master of Public Health Fall 2025 Orientation at Central Michigan University
On September 10, 2025, the Division of Public Health at Central Michigan University welcomed a new cohort of 25 students into its Master of Public Health (MPH) Program. For many, it marked not just the start of an academic journey, but the realization of a long-cherished dream to step into the world of public health and contribute meaningfully to global well-being.
Although the MPH program at CMU is relatively young, having been established only nine years ago, it has already built a reputation for excellence. In recent years, faculty-led research and student contributions have earned recognition nationally and internationally, inspiring aspiring public health professionals from across the globe to choose CMU as their academic home.
The orientation session, led by Dr. Joseph N. Inungu, Professor and Director of the MPH Program, set the tone for this transformative journey. In his welcome remarks, Dr. Inungu shared both encouragement and challenges.
“It is an honor to see each of you here. Here, you will be asked to engage deeply, wrestle with complex ideas, push beyond your comfort zone, and commit to the hard work of learning and discovery. True growth,” he reminded them, “comes not from standing safely on the sidelines, but from daring to participate fully.”
The session was also attended by distinguished faculty members including Dr. Snyder (The Division Director), Dr. Sergey Soshnikov, Dr. Bady, and Ms. Mary Kushion. Together, they introduced the mission, vision, and goals of the MPH program, providing an overview of the curriculum, research opportunities, and the broader role of public health professionals in addressing today’s pressing challenges.
Students, in turn, had the opportunity to share their aspirations and research interests. One student, Kartik from India, spoke about his unique connection to CMU. Having studied under Dr. Soshnikov during his undergraduate years in Uzbekistan, Kartik was inspired to pursue his graduate education at CMU when his mentor joined the faculty. His story reflected the personal and professional ties that often shape academic journeys and resonated with many in the room.
The orientation concluded with the faculty urging students to actively engage in professional networks and public health platforms to strengthen their future careers. As the session closed, students left with a clearer sense of the path ahead—an academic journey shaped by rigorous study, meaningful research, and a shared commitment to improving the community’s health.
With good wishes from the faculty and a spirit of determination among peers, the MPH Class of Fall 2025 stepped forward, ready to embark on a new chapter at CMU.
