Health Professions dean receives national recognition for contributions
Jennifer Simpson, AuD, CCC-A, awarded the CAPCSD Honors of the Council
The Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders has selected Jennifer Simpson, dean of The Herbert H. and Grace A Dow College of Health Professions, to receive its highest honors: the Honors of the Council.
“This prestigious recognition reflects Dr. Simpson’s exceptional leadership and lasting contributions to CAPCSD and to academic education in communication sciences and disorders,” said Ned Campbell, executive director of CAPCSD.
Simpson, who holds a Doctor of Audiology and Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology, joined the CMU
community in August 2025. During her academic tenure, Simpson has received numerous awards and recognitions for leadership, inclusiveness, scholarship and service. She is a Distinguished Fellow of Practice by the National Academies of Practice-Audiology and a Fellow in the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
A press release from the organization notes that Simpson was selected to receive the honor as the result of a professional record that “reflects exemplary performance across all criteria for the Honors of the Council, distinguished by transformative leadership, administrative excellence, strategic vision, and a deep, sustained commitment to equity in communication sciences and disorders.”
Simpson also previously served as president of CAPCSD. She was praised for her efforts leading “comprehensive strategic planning, governance reform, and organizational rebranding, while spearheading the development of several major initiatives that continue to shape the future of the field.”
Provost Paula Lancaster said Simpson began to look for opportunities to further advance and strengthen academic programs in the health professions, including within the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, immediately after starting her new role at CMU.
"Dr. Simpson has exciting ideas for the future of our health professions programs, including opportunities for greater interdisciplinary teaching and learning and community engagement,” Lancaster said. “She is an outstanding leader who is deeply committed to the success of our students, faculty, and academic programs. This recognition is certainly well-deserved."
