When Hurricane Helene hit Newland, North Carolina, shortly after the start of the school year in September 2024, Avery County Schools were forced to stay closed until November 6 due to damage in their community.

Students from the registered student organization Emerging Social Studies Teachers Association (ESSTA) wanted to help. They started a campaign to collect school supplies and donations for the schools.

The service project began in the fall semester with founding president Hailey Rogocki (’25) and Vice President Erynn Dobson (’25). During the spring semester, President Lauren Cole spearheaded a campaign to place collection boxes around campus and set up tables at Walmart to collect materials and donations.

In total, they collected $360 in donations and more than five boxes of school supplies, including pencils, pens, and notebooks. Members of the ESSTA mailed materials to Avery County Schools May 8.
