Health Professions dean announces search for next associate dean
Current associate dean Zimmerman to rejoin faculty
Jennifer Simpson, dean of the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions at Central Michigan University, has announced the launch of a search for the college’s next associate dean.
Greg Zimmerman, who began in the associate dean’s role in fall 2019, has announced his intent to return to a faculty role beginning August 1. Zimmerman also previously served as interim dean of the college from summer 2024 to summer 2025.
"Dr. Zimmerman’s steady and thoughtful leadership during his time as interim dean has provided critical continuity and direction for the college," said CMU Provost Lancaster. "We are deeply grateful for his commitment to our students, faculty, and staff, and for the strong foundation he has helped sustain during this transitional period."
To lead the search, Simpson has appointed a committee chaired by Christopher Tycner, Associate Dean, College of Science & Engineering. The search committee will play a crucial role in the selection of the next associate dean. Members of the committee are:
- Naveen Sharma, chair, The School of Health Sciences
- Kathleen A. Flannery, program director, Physical Assistant Program
- Roop Chand Jayaraman, associate professor, The School of Health Sciences
- Karen Elizabeth Horwood Grossnickle, associate professor and director of clinical education, Physical Therapy Program
- Sarah Grinn, associate professor, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders
- Kristin N. Neubecker, business manager, The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions
- Hajime Otani, chair, Department of Psychology
- Amy Malheim, director of the Interprofessional Education and Practice Center
- Xandar Holtrust, student, undergraduate Athletic Training Program
The associate dean serves as a senior academic leader within the college and works closely with the dean, department and school chairpersons, program directors, faculty, and staff. The role provides critical support across a wide range of academic and administrative functions including curriculum development, faculty affairs, strategic planning, budgeting, accreditation and compliance, program development, and student success initiatives.
In the absence of the dean, the associate dean serves as the college’s chief academic officer and helps ensure continuity of leadership and operations. The position is instrumental in advancing the college’s mission by supporting faculty development, fostering research and grant activity, and promoting collaboration across disciplines.
The associate dean will also contribute to enrollment management, recruitment of faculty and staff, and the ongoing enhancement of academic programs to meet evolving workforce and community needs. The role requires a commitment to shared governance, collaboration, and creating an environment where faculty, staff, and students can thrive.
"CMU is committed to excellence in health professions, education and student success," Simpson said. "We are seeking a dynamic and experienced academic leader who will support innovation, strengthen our academic programs, and help advance the college’s impact across the state and beyond."
Additional details about the position and application process will be shared as the search progresses.
