How CMU senior Tupac Holmes is launching a career in cybersecurity
Hands-on learning, mentorship, and campus pride helped him turn an internship at Capital One into a job offer
Tupac Holmes, a senior majoring in information systems from Chicago, Ill., will graduate in December 2025. After completing a summer internship with Capital One, he has already secured his next step: a full-time position in the company’s Cybersecurity Development Program.
A summer of real-world problem solving
Holmes’ internship gave him the chance to work on projects with immediate impact. He and his team scripted AI processes, developed network monitoring systems, and built a chatbot designed to guide employees and customers through security procedures.
“The biggest thing I learned is that cybersecurity never stops evolving,” Holmes said. “Even the most senior people I worked with were still learning every day. If you’re willing to learn constantly, you’ll always be valuable.”
Preparation that started in the classroom
Holmes credits his College of Business Administration coursework for preparing him to step into a corporate environment. Team projects, presentations and cross-disciplinary assignments mirrored the collaboration he later experienced at Capital One.
“Almost everything that gets done in the real world is in teams,” he said. “Because of the group work I had to do in my classes, I was very well prepared.”
In addition to coursework, Holmes gained practical experience through campus jobs in CMU’s Office of Information Technology and Security Operation Center. “Those experiences separated me from other competition,” he said.
Leadership beyond academics
For Holmes, success at CMU has extended well beyond technical skills. One of his proudest moments was being selected as a Homecoming Ambassador, representing the university at one of its largest campus events. “Being a Homecoming Ambassador was a very proud moment, and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity,” he said.
Advice for fellow business students
Holmes said the key to professional growth is taking on challenges that feel bigger than you.
“Don’t shy away from opportunities you think are too big,” he said. “Stepping into that uncomfortable area allows you to grow and build a great reputation wherever you work. And most people want to help you, so ask. It makes life easier.”
Looking ahead with ambition
With his Capital One role secured, Holmes plans to continue building his career in cybersecurity while exploring entrepreneurial opportunities. His long-term goal is to reach a seven-figure net worth by age 30.
But for him, motivation comes from more than personal ambition. “My family comes first, and the people around me inspire me to keep going,” he said. “I also want to show others that being yourself and working hard can get you anywhere. If I can do it, so can you.”
