Central Michigan University alumni who reached the highest ranks during military service will discuss how the university’s motto played a role in shaping their careers later this month.

Participants in the 5th Annual General and Flag Officer Leadership Panel will discuss how their approach to military leadership was guided by “Knowledge, Virtue, Friendship.”

“CMU taught me that leadership isn’t just about making decisions; it’s about making a difference, grounded in integrity and collaboration,” said Darren Werner, a retired Army major general and current president of SAPA Transmission. “That foundation continues to shape how I lead, build teams and serve the defense industrial base.”

Werner will participant on this year’s flag officer panel alongside retired Marine Corps lieutenant general Thomas Conant.  The panel takes place from 2-4 p.m. on Sept. 19 in French Auditorium in the Education and Human Services Building.

The discussion will focus on how experiences at CMU helped shape the military careers of panelists.

“Central Michigan University’s motto—Knowledge, Virtue, Friendship—has been a guiding force throughout my career,” said Werner, who earned a bachelor’s degree from CMU in 1989. “The GO/FO Leadership Seminar exemplifies these values by fostering deep strategic insight, ethical leadership and enduring professional careers.”

Before the panel discussion, participants will meet with students in the Integration of Science, Technology and Engineering programs during a luncheon.

The flag officer event also provides the university with an opportunity to celebrate its relationship with every branch of the U.S. military. Over the years, more than 150 generals and admirals have enrolled in CMU programs.

Werner was also named 2025’s Distinguished Alumni earlier this year. He will be recognized at CMU’s home football game on Sept. 20.
