SGA Popouts bring government opportunities to business students
CMU initiative connects student leaders with College of Business Administration
Central Michigan University’s Student Government Association is marking its 105th year with a renewed focus on engagement, visibility and student leadership through its new SGA Popouts initiative. The program is designed to bring student government directly into classrooms across campus, including the College of Business Administration later this fall.
The initiative highlights SGA’s mission of representing students, advocating for positive change, and enhancing campus life through collaboration with university leaders and student organizations.
Leadership opportunities for business students
“SGA has a variety of leadership, marketing and accounting opportunities for students,” said SGA President Akua Amofaa Acheampong. “Students can choose to represent the College of Business Administration by running for Senate as senators, with pathways to leadership such as Senate Leader. There are also opportunities to serve on the Student Budget Allocation Committee among other committees where they will decide where and how student dollars are allocated for the different RSOs through the SBAC application process.”
Through SGA, business students can:
- Run for Senate to represent CBA, with pathways to leadership such as Senate Leader. Representatives from RSOs may also pursue roles like Speaker of the House.
- Gain hands-on experience in areas such as marketing, accounting and organizational leadership.
- Participate in the Student Budget Allocation Committee, a group that determines how student funds are distributed to registered student organizations.
- Serve on university-wide committees that shape policies and programs while ensuring the student voice is heard in decision-making.
Skills that translate beyond campus
Acheampong emphasized that while SGA draws members from across CMU, there is room for more CBA representation. Business students who engage with SGA gain valuable exposure to campus governance while building skills in communication, finance and strategy skills that mirror those sought in today’s competitive job market.
How to get involved:
- SGA elections will be held during the first general board meeting of the semester in Anspach 161.
- SGA Popouts in the College of Business Administration will take place in late September.
- Students interested in running for a Senate seat, joining committees, or learning more can connect with SGA via cmustudentgovernment.com or by contacting President Akua Acheampong and Vice President Kathryn House.
As CMU celebrates 105 years of student government, the SGA Popouts initiative underscores its commitment to building meaningful connections across campus and business students are encouraged to take full advantage of the leadership and experiential learning opportunities available.
