Students help shape the future of CMU’s College of Business
Dean’s Student Advisory Board gives students a direct voice in college leadership and student experience
The Central Michigan University College of Business Administration is creating new opportunities for students to help shape the future of the college through the Dean’s Student Advisory Board.
Launched this academic year by Dean Chris Moberg, the board brings together students from a variety of majors, backgrounds and experiences to provide feedback, share ideas and collaborate with college leadership on ways to improve the student experience.
“One of our responsibilities as a college is to ensure students feel heard, supported and connected to their educational experience,” Moberg said. “This board gives students a direct voice in conversations about the future of the college while also helping us better understand how we can continue improving the student experience.”
The board is designed to reflect the breadth of the college’s student body and continue growing to include students from multiple academic programs and class standings, as well as transfer, international and online learners. The board meets several times a semester to discuss student needs, identify opportunities for improvement and collaborate on ideas related to student wellness, accessibility, experiential learning and curriculum feedback.
For students involved, the experience offers an opportunity to help shape the college while building relationships with fellow students, faculty, staff and alumni.
“I joined the Dean’s student advisory board to help make the place I love, Grawn Hall, a better place for students so they can feel like they belong,” said Jaclyn Serazio, a marketing and logistics management student from Livonia, Mich. “I knew that my voice as a student would be heard on this board and I could make a positive impact on my learning environment.”
During the board’s first semester, students worked with the dean’s office to identify priorities and areas of focus. When the College of Business Administration’s Executive Advisory Board visited campus this spring, members of the Student Advisory Board also had the opportunity to meet with alumni leaders during a networking lunch focused on conversation, mentorship and professional connections.
Serving on the board has also given students the opportunity to collaborate with peers from across the college while contributing ideas that may shape future student experiences.
“Serving on the Dean’s Student Advisory Board has been an incredible opportunity to collaborate with other student leaders who are just as passionate about our school’s future as I am,” said Jaden Stevens, a marketing and logistics double major from Boyceville, Wis. “It’s been more than just a leadership role; it’s been a chance to represent the student voice and help shape a better experience for everyone on campus.”
Students say one of the most meaningful aspects of the experience has been the opportunity to build direct connections with college leadership while helping advocate for their peers.
“Having a connection with the dean, Dr. Chris Moberg, is something invaluable,” Serazio said. “It makes you realize how much the CBA cares about its students when the most important person in the building knows your name and your story.”
As the board continues into its second year, students will begin developing smaller committees and task forces focused on key areas identified during the group’s first semester.
