5 ways to use LinkedIn to grow your network while in college

Career Development Center offers expert tips to help students connect, engage and stand out

At Central Michigan University’s College of Business Administration, networking is more than a recommendation, it’s a career readiness essential. Students are encouraged to start early, be intentional and use platforms like LinkedIn to build meaningful industry connections.

Building a professional network is one of the most important steps college students can take to prepare for internships and full-time jobs. LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional networking platform, offers a variety of tools for students to showcase their skills and connect with industry professionals.

Nimilitha Narayani Sadaram, assistant director of CMU’s Career Development Center, shared her top five strategies for using LinkedIn effectively and growing a meaningful network.

1. Build a strategic network

When building your network, focus on quality over quantity. Connecting with professionals, recruiters and CMU alumni in your field can open doors to valuable advice and opportunities.

“Start by looking for alumni from Central Michigan University at companies you’re interested in. That common connection often makes it easier to begin a conversation,” she said.

2. Personalize every connection request

Sending a connection request is only the first step. Adding a personal note introduces you and highlights your interest in the professional’s background or company.

“Always include a short message when you connect,” she said. “It helps you stand out and shows you’re intentional about building relationships.”

3. Reach out for informational conversations

Once connected, consider asking professionals for informational meetings, also known as coffee chats. These informal conversations can provide valuable insights into industries, roles and companies.

“Many professionals are happy to share their experiences. It’s a great way to learn and build connections that may lead to referrals in the future,” she said.

4. Follow recruiters and stay informed

Following recruiters and professionals at your target companies allows you to see job postings and updates as soon as they’re shared.

“When you apply for a position, you can message the recruiter to express your interest. It demonstrates that you’re proactive and engaged,” she said.

5. Stay active and showcase your work

An updated and polished LinkedIn profile is essential, but staying active on the platform is equally important. Sharing your projects, commenting on posts and engaging with your network keeps your profile visible.

“Posting about your experiences and accomplishments shows employers that you’re involved and enthusiastic about your field,” she said.

Resources for success

The Career Development Center offers LinkedIn profile reviews and resources to help students optimize their online presence. Students can schedule an appointment with a career advisor to get personalized feedback and strategies.

“LinkedIn is a powerful tool for building relationships and growing your professional network while you’re still in college,” she said. “Start early and use it intentionally.”
