Building careers beyond numbers with UHY
Firm highlights growth, teamwork, and professional development
Students in Grawn Hall connected with recruiters from UHY, a public accounting and professional services firm with offices across Michigan and the United States. Megan Spencer, senior university talent acquisition, and Julianna Spirou, university talent acquisition associate, spoke with students about internships, staff roles, and the skills needed to thrive in the profession.
“Our entry-level roles usually start on audit or tax teams, and interns are fully immersed during busy season,” Spencer said. “We’re not just handing out busy work—we make sure students see the process through from start to finish, so they understand what a day in the profession really looks like.”
Entry-level staff roles for graduates typically begin in January or September, with occasional June start dates. UHY’s winter internships run from January through April and are open to students who have completed introductory accounting courses. For those earlier in their program, the Connect leadership development program provides a first step.
Spencer noted that UHY offers a balance of big-firm resources and small-firm connections.
“As a middle-market firm, we have the training and development opportunities of larger firms,” she said. “But we also maintain the one-on-one client relationships you’d see at smaller firms. It’s the best of both worlds.”
Spirou encouraged students to focus on more than technical expertise.
“We can always teach you accounting,” she said. “But soft skills—teamwork, adaptability, and communication—are what make you stand out. Employers really value those qualities.”
With nine Michigan offices and 40 across the country, UHY offers students flexibility in location while maintaining a strong local presence in communities like Kalamazoo, Cadillac, Traverse City, Ann Arbor, and Detroit.
