The School of Politics, Society, Justice and Public Service is once again partnering with The Washington Center (TWC) to offer students a new, hands-on learning opportunity.

Central Michigan University students have the opportunity to attend the inaugural Nonprofit Leadership & Advocacy Seminar November 11–16, 2025, in Washington, D.C. This immersive, four-day program equips students with the tools to turn passion into action, covering critical topics such as:

  • Communicating with your mission to attract partners, donors, and advocates
  • Navigating compliance, governance, and tax regulations
  • Designing effective and sustainable fundraising strategies
  • Leading teams and managing organizational growth
  • Networking with established leaders and potential collaborators

In the fall of 2022, Political Science & Public Administration faculty member Emma Powell took the Nonprofit Lobbying Strategies class to Washington, D.C. as part of CMU’s partnership with TWC. Following the success of that trip, TWC recognized the value of an academic seminar focused on nonprofit leadership and advocacy.

“Watching students learn from the professionals, network with CMU alumni in DC, and experience the policy work for national nonprofit organizations was inspiring,” said Powell. “I am thrilled to see this opportunity expand across CMU as well as other partner institutions, nationwide.”

Washington, D.C., home to more than 13,600 registered nonprofit organizations offers unparalleled access to policymakers, donors, and potential partners. With its unique combination of expertise, opportunity, and connection, the region is the ideal setting for students to gain real-world insight into the nonprofit sector.

For students committed to making a difference, this seminar is the next step toward a rewarding and impactful career in nonprofit leadership.
