Twenty-five middle school students from Boryeong, South Korea, spent 3.5 weeks at Central Michigan University taking classes and learning about American culture.
The CMU–Boryeong Cultural and Language Camp is a joint project between the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the College of Business Administration. This is the second summer CMU has hosted the camp.
Students attend traditional classes during the day and complete adventures in culture on nights and weekends. They worked on improving their speaking, reading, and writing of English with lessons and vocabulary focused on education, travel and hobbies, and conversational exchanges. They traveled to Mackinac Island, experienced the indigenous history of Michigan, went tubing down the Chippewa River, viewed the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and experienced American baseball. Department of English Language and Literature faculty member Holly Lewis served as the program director for the camp.
“The program is a testament to the university working together,” said Lewis. “Many departments and individuals gave time and resources to help make the students' experience special.”
Students received a campus tour from admissions, a morning of fun in the Center for Excellence in STEM Education makerspace, a library tour, movie night with the English department, and activities with Museum Studies, Biosciences, Astronomy, to name a few.
Community partners also helped make the camp a success. Students met with English conversation partners from local schools, local teachers from Art Reach of Mid Michigan sponsored an art night, and a local yoga practitioner gave the students a yoga class.
The camp culminates with mock application to CMU and the writing of an entrance-style essay to practice what it would be like to apply to an American college.
“It's been a joy to create meaningful activities to showcase the best of Mount Pleasant and the best of the University,” said Lewis. “We're excited about the potential to continue this program in the future and would welcome anyone who might find this experience enriching to email me to sign up to volunteer next year. We welcome departments and individuals.”
