Central Michigan University’s student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has earned the Superior Merit Award for the 2024–2025 cycle—one of SHRM’s highest levels of recognition for student chapters nationwide.

SHRM is the world’s largest HR association, serving more than 340,000 members across 180 countries. Its mission is to advance the professional practice of human resources and support the people who work in it. Through student chapters like CMU’s, SHRM provides early access to industry resources, mentorship opportunities, and a strong foundation for future HR professionals.

The award honors chapters that demonstrate excellence in operations, programming, member engagement, and professional development aligned with SHRM’s mission. It reflects the CMU chapter’s commitment to meaningful programming and continued growth as future business leaders.

“I’m so proud of the work that the CMU SHRM student chapter did this last year,” said faculty advisor Amy McGinnis. “They brought in several alumni for workshops and programs, and several of our members participated in the MISHRM Conference and annual state-wide HR Games competition—taking 2nd place and winning the Callie Zipple Spirit of HR Award. Some CMU SHRM members are pursuing the SHRM-CP professional certification as well.”

National SHRM leadership praised the contributions of student chapters like CMU’s.

“The members of our SHRM student chapters embody the future of HR leadership, making it essential to recognize the pivotal role they play in SHRM’s ongoing success,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, SHRM president and CEO. “The dedication and achievements of the Central Michigan University chapter demonstrate that the profession’s future is in capable and inspired hands. I commend their accomplishments and their ability to drive innovative programming, professional development, and a growing interest in HR as we adapt to the evolving dynamics of the workplace.”

Adam Klan, a senior human resource management student from Van Buren Township and the chapter’s incoming president, said the recognition highlights the chapter’s focus on connection and growth.

“To me, watching CMU's SHRM chapter evolve during the short time I have been with them has been truly inspiring,” Klan said. “The organization has done everything possible to deliver the most engaging experience for its members. From connecting me with a mentor through SHRM's mentorship program to encouraging me to sign up for and attend conferences, SHRM has pushed me out of my comfort zone.”

“One of the only reasons I am working as a Senior Career Peer Advisor this upcoming fall is due to a member of SHRM who took the time to mentor me and encourage me to join the Career Development Center,” he added. “I am thrilled to be stepping into the role of president this semester, where I will continue to strive for the same recognition we achieved this year.”

SHRM encourages student chapters to submit annual applications documenting their impact. Chapters are evaluated on event planning, community involvement, and member development during the award window, which runs from May 1 to April 30.

For students considering joining, McGinnis offered this encouragement, “CMU SHRM membership helps advance your career, builds confidence, and expands your network in meaningful ways.”
