The historic rivalry between the Central Michigan University Chippewas and the Western Michigan University Broncos is taking on a new kind of competition this fall. This is one that trades touchdowns for teamwork and tackles for generosity.
The CMU Police Department and the WMU Police Department are facing off in a Food Donation Smackdown, turning their friendly rivalry into an effort to fight food insecurity on their campuses.
This long-standing rivalry has deep roots. The CMU Chippewas and Broncos first met on the football field in 1907, and they’ve played each other every year since 1943, battling for the coveted Victory Cannon Trophy. Now, that same competitive spirit is being used to help students in need.
From November 1–7, both departments will collect non-perishable food items for their respective student food pantries. The department that gathers the heaviest total weight of donations will claim bragging rights, and the losing team’s Chief will post a photo of themselves in the opposing team’s hat.
Donations at CMU can be dropped off at the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center, located in the Bovee University Center, Room 106, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Contributions made outside those hours can be delivered directly to the CMU Police Department.
“This challenge is a fun way to highlight our rivalry with WMU while supporting a cause that directly benefits our students,” said CMU Police Chief Cameron Wassman. “We’re calling on everyone to step up and show that CMU pride goes beyond the field; it’s about community.”
This year, CMUPD is encouraging the campus community to come together, make a difference and Feed the Rivalry. Let’s prove once again that Chippewa pride is fueled by heart, generosity and teamwork.
