In 2025, the Central Michigan University community submitted 80 nominations for the annual Staff Excellence Awards – a figure nearly double that of the prior year.

Now, in 2026, university community members have set a new record: 117 nominations submitted for this year’s awards. And those nominations have been enthusiastically worded, say members of the reviewing committee.

“It was amazing to see so many individuals recognized by their colleagues for their dedication and commitment," said Jeff Angera, co-chair of the Shared Governance Council and chair and faculty member in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. “Given the caliber of nominations and the worthy pool of nominees, those who were selected this year are truly exemplary.”

The Staff Excellence Awards, which were first awarded in 1993, recognize employees who offer outstanding service to the university and its students. Any member of the community can submit a nomination, which are then redacted and carefully vetted by a committee of faculty and staff members from the university’s Shared Governance Council.

“When we recognize excellence in our staff, we do more than reward achievement — we signal our values, inspire continued commitment, and strengthen a culture where people feel seen, valued, and motivated to do their best work,” said Joe Garrison, co-chair of the Shared Governance Council, university budget officer, and special assistant to the university president for strategic planning. “The SGC is proud to partner with HR on this awards program. Our Council is made up of a broad-based group of caring faculty, staff, students, and administrators working together to enhance our organizational culture. This university service aligns well with priority three of our strategic plan.”

Garrison said 19 individuals will be selected to be recognized at a ceremony held in September. Winners will be notified later this spring, Garrison said, and will receive special gold CMU nametags, award plaques and a one-year parking pass.

“Reading these recommendations made me proud to be at CMU,” Angera said. “I think it is critical to recognize our colleagues for doing so much to make this a place for students, staff, and faculty to thrive.”
