Running toward student success

New associate director Niemiec brings energy, experience, and student focus to the Hub

When Anthony Niemiec joined Central Michigan University’s College of Business Administration this fall as associate director of external relations and student services, he brought with him both classroom experience and a passion for supporting students.

“I need to be out and about helping people—whether that’s as a mentor, a coach, or a teacher,” Niemiec said. “That’s where I found my passion, and it’s something I’ve carried into this role.”

Niemiec’s path began after high school, when he volunteered as a football coach while taking classes at Delta College. That experience sparked his interest in education, eventually leading him to Saginaw Valley State University to pursue secondary education while coaching three sports. He later earned his master’s degree in instructional technology from Fort Hays State University.

“As the youngest teacher in my building, people automatically came to me for tech help,” Niemiec said. “I realized how powerful technology could be for learning, so I leaned into that. My capstone project focused on how to use AI efficiently and effectively, which is something I want to bring into this role too.”

The transition from classroom to higher education felt natural. “What was very enticing about this role was the unique blend of working with faculty, students, and external partners—all to create more opportunities for students,” Niemiec said. “That’s my number one goal: to help students in any way I can.”

Now overseeing the student ambassador program, Niemiec said he’s energized by the team he has joined. “I think my number one challenge is going to be matching Lori’s [Driessnack] energy,” he joked. “I don’t know if that’s even possible.”

Outside of work, Niemiec keeps moving. A sports fan who once lived within walking distance of Comerica Park, Little Caesars Arena, and Ford Field, he also finds joy in long-distance running.

“Crossing the finish line at the Detroit Marathon was literally the best feeling of my life,” Niemiec said. “I couldn’t believe I had done it.”

For Niemiec, both running and professional growth come down to persistence and forward motion. “Since this is a new position, I’m excited to create the path for what success looks like,” he said. “I’m ready to see where this role takes me.”
