Sales skills, serious results
CMU’s Pi Sigma Epsilon chapter turns classroom lessons into career-shaping experiences—one competition at a time
At Central Michigan University, Pi Sigma Epsilon isn’t just a student organization—it’s a launchpad.
Whether they’re pitching to industry judges, coaching their peers, or building confidence one conversation at a time, PSE members are sharpening professional sales skills that pay off far beyond Grawn Hall.
“You don’t have to know anything about sales to join,” said Kayli Kalish, a newly graduated management major from Naperville, Ill., with minors in sales and marketing. “We teach everything you need to know, and the skills you gain—whether it’s public speaking, confidence, or strategic thinking—apply to any career.”
Kalish joined PSE during her first semester and quickly rose through the ranks, serving as president for two years. Through competitions, leadership opportunities, and peer mentorship, she discovered her voice and her professional direction.
“I always knew I wanted to go into business,” she said. “But joining PSE and participating in competitions helped me realize how much I enjoyed sales. That’s when I added the minors and really found my fit.”
At CMU, Pi Sigma Epsilon Zeta Nu chapter is open to all majors and provides hands-on experience through competitions like the CMU Sales Challenge, the Sales Rival Challenge with Western Michigan, and national PSE events. These contests simulate real-world sales scenarios and give students the chance to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom.
“The competition made me more comfortable speaking in front of a crowd,” said senior marketing student Kierra Ryan. “I can bring this skill into the workplace when looking into leadership roles, giving presentations, and talking to executives.”
For Ryan, the competition didn’t just build skills—it transformed her outlook. “You can do anything you put your mind to. Be confident and authentic in who you are, and you will succeed. Never try to act or be someone you’re not.”
Students who want even more stage time and challenge can compete in regional and national PSE events, including the National Convention and Sales & Marketing Project competitions. The CMU chapter has made its mark, consistently earning finalist placements and taking home top awards for project management, sales excellence, and chapter operations.
“It’s about more than just selling,” said faculty advisor Nick Hussein. “Professional sales is about developing a skill set that can be applied to life moments. We are always selling, and nothing happens in business until you sell something.”
Hussein is quick to deflect credit for the program’s success. “I’m just the bridge,” he said. “The students do the work. They get the interviews. They land the jobs. I just help connect the dots.”
As a mentor and coach, Hussein has helped shape PSE’s reputation as one of the top chapters in the region—emphasizing preparation, professionalism, and peer support. His influence is visible in every aspect of the organization’s success, from individual growth to career outcomes.
“Professor Hussein makes sure every student in PSE gets value from the experience,” Kalish said. “Whether it’s through connections, competitions, or career guidance, he’s always there to support us.”
The results speak for themselves. PSE’s track record includes high placement at national events, strong relationships with corporate partners, and a 100% job placement rate for active members after graduation.
“We call it ‘the secret sauce,’” said Kalish. “The preparation, the teamwork, the community—it all adds up to something special.”
For students ready to step outside their comfort zone, sharpen their communication skills, and grow both personally and professionally, Pi Sigma Epsilon offers more than just membership. It offers momentum.
