The Society for Human Resource Management at Central Michigan University is more than a student organization; it’s a catalyst for students preparing to lead with empathy and strategy in the workplace.

“Our mission is to serve the needs of HR professionals by providing the most current and comprehensive resources, and to advance the profession by promoting HR’s essential, strategic role,” said faculty advisor Amy McGinnis. “At CMU, that starts with giving students real experiences they can’t get anywhere else.”

The student-led chapter offers a mix of professional development and community engagement. Each semester, members connect with speakers from major companies, attend facility tours, and participate in résumé-building and interview-skills workshops. They also take part in spirited discussions and debates on current HR topics.

“The purpose of the RSO is to serve the students in it,” said Adam Klan, chapter president. “Whether they need help applying for internships, connecting with HR professionals, or finding volunteer opportunities, our job is to meet those needs.”

Members also have the opportunity to compete in the statewide HR Games, a conference and case competition where students test their knowledge, strengthen leadership skills, and build networks with HR professionals from across Michigan. Local support from Valley SHRM, the chapter’s professional partner, helps fund travel and conference expenses.

“Serving as team captain at the state competition helped me strengthen my leadership and HR skills,” said Isabel Wyn, chapter vice president. “It also allowed me to network with professionals and learn about current trends in the field.”

Four female students stand together in a line. Three have long blond hair and one has long dark brown hair. They are all wearing black business suits and lanyards. One holds a crystal trophy. The advisor is at the right side in a bright pink jacket.
CMU’s SHRM team celebrates their third-place finish at the statewide HR Games, where students put their HR knowledge to the test and networked with professionals from across Michigan.

Students can join SHRM at both the local and national levels. Through national membership, they gain access to mentorship programs, webinars, and career resources like the Career Compass podcast and SHRM Foundation scholarships of up to $5,000.

The CMU SHRM Chapter meets on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. in Grawn Hall, Room 207. While the organization is professionally focused, members also make time for fun — like their recent pumpkin painting social.

For students pursuing a future in human resources, SHRM offers the perfect balance of professional growth and personal connection, embodying CMU’s hands-on, people-first approach to business education.
