CMU's College of Medicine Mount Pleasant Sim Center earns ASPE accreditation
As part of the inaugural accreditation process, the Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) has granted full accreditation for human simulation to the simulation lab on the College of Medicine’s Mount Pleasant campus. Only 19 simulation centers in the country were included in the initial accredited cohort.
“This achievement is indicative of the team’s commitment to outstanding medical education and acknowledges that their work is on par with the very best in human simulation,” stated Tina Thompson, Ph.D., interim dean. “It is an honor to be recognized for providing exceptional educational and training opportunities to our learners through the use of simulation in all its forms.”
The simulation center in Mount Pleasant includes two control rooms and fourteen patient rooms, two of which are set up for high-fidelity manikin simulations. While the center supports a wide variety of students and curriculums, its main priority is delivering supplemental instruction to first and second-year medical students in Essentials of Clinical Skills longitudinal coursework, where our students develop strong interpersonal and clinical skills through standardized patient simulations.
ASPE is the international organization of educators dedicated to human simulation. They promote best practices in the application of standardized patient methodology for education, assessment and research. Now, ASPE also provides a distinctive pathway to accreditation to recognize programs and institutions that demonstrate ongoing adherence and stewardship of these best practices.
