From generosity to impact: Ferguson family supports the next generation of audiologists

For nearly two decades, Kip and Nicole Ferguson have quietly donated to the future of Central Michigan University. By formalizing the annual giving they were already committed to, along with a modest increase in their support, they discovered an opportunity to create something more personal and purposeful: the Ferguson Family Scholarship for Audiology. Through a formal commitment with CMU, their longstanding support now reflects what matters most to them: opening doors for future generations of CMU students who are interested in pursuing audiology.

The scholarship reflects a family who “have the hearts of gold and bleed maroon.” Dr. Nicole Ferguson, Director of Clinical Education and Services in Audiology, is a proud two-time alumna who earned both her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Audiology degrees from CMU. Throughout her career, she has remained passionate about mentoring aspiring audiologists and helping shape the future of the profession. Before she joined the university, she served for nearly a decade as an off-campus clinical preceptor. Today, as Director of Clinical Education and Services in Audiology, Dr. Ferguson continues that commitment by mentoring future audiologists, expanding clinical opportunities, and helping prepare the next generation of the profession.

Kip Ferguson is also a proud CMU alumnus, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at CMU. As an Analyst and Trainer in Healthcare IT at CMU, his work supports the technology and systems used to educate and prepare future healthcare professionals. His commitment to education extends to his own continued learning as he works toward a Master of Arts in Education, Training, and Development.

The Ferguson’s connection to CMU continues through their sons, Thomas and Ryan who are each carrying forward the family’s commitment to education, leadership, and service. Thomas is a current CMU student and member of the Leadership Advancement Scholars program. Ryan is currently dual enrolled at CMU while completing high school and plans to continue at the university after graduation, with an interest in studying audiology.

Education and service to one’s community are values central to the Ferguson Family Scholarship for Audiology. In addition to supporting academic achievement, the scholarship gives preference to students who have demonstrated commitment to volunteer service and making a positive difference in their communities. For the Fergusons, those values are reflected in how they live and serve. Kip previously served as Scoutmaster of Troop 604, and both Thomas and Ryan achieved the rank of Eagle Scout through years of leadership and community service. Nicole is an active member of the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club and serves as the Lions Regional Speech and Hearing Chair, extending her commitment to hearing healthcare beyond the university and into the community. For the Fergusons, success is measured not only by academic and professional achievement, but also by how individuals use their knowledge, talents, and education to serve others and strengthen the communities around them. Through the scholarship, they hope to support future audiologists who share that commitment.

For the past 11 years, the Fergusons are proud to call Mount Pleasant home and are grateful to be part of the CMU community that has shaped their education, careers, and family life. The Ferguson Family Scholarship for Audiology brings together the values that have become central to their lives: education, service, community, and a commitment to the future of audiology. By turning years of annual giving into a more intentional commitment, they hope to create opportunities for future students while giving back to the university and community that have given so much to their family.
