Teddy Bear Clinic teaches children about healthcare
CDLL children were invited to bring in their favorite stuffed animal for a free “health check” by PA students at this interactive, educational experience.
“Hi! What is your teddy’s name? Let’s get them checked in so we can help them feel better!” CMU students used this welcoming approach as they greeted children visiting the Teddy Bear Clinic, hosted by the Child Development and Learning Laboratory (CDLL) inside the EHS Building earlier this summer.
For this unique partnership between the CDLL and the Physician Assistant (PA) Program, children were invited to bring their favorite teddy bear, or other stuffed animal, for a free “health check.” The goal was to create a fun, interactive, and educational experience to help children become more comfortable in a healthcare setting.
Upon arrival, each child received a personalized “provider” name tag and check-up sticker sheet to document their visit. If any children did not bring their own teddy bear, a stuffed animal would be provided for them by the CDLL.
Together, the children and their stuffed animals visited several examination stations including Cough & Cold, Stomachache, Orthopedic, Vaccination, Dental Hygiene, and Feelings & Emotions, among others. The PA students placed at each station would perform the check-up and answer any questions the children may have—reinforcing proper healthcare terminology and etiquette through an engaging and fun way for young children to understand.

As they rotated through the various stations, children and their stuffed animals would receive checkup stickers to celebrate each accomplished examination, documenting their progress. Children then turned in their sticker sheet at the front desk after completing all stations and received a sucker before leaving the clinic.
Jackie Weller, Director of the CDLL, says that the children and their families really enjoyed the event and that they plan to host a Teddy Bear Clinic again in the future.
