United Wholesale Mortgage–CMU partnership motivates employee to finish his degree

Through its partnership with Central Michigan University, United Wholesale Mortgage continues to empower team members to grow personally and professionally investing in their skills, expertise, and future.

When United Wholesale Mortgage announced its new partnership with CMU, Senior Account Executive Dennis Thompson Jr. knew it was time to take the next step in his education.

“Going back to school was always on my to-do list,” Dennis said. “That partnership email was the sign I needed to go back.”

Nearly ten years after starting his undergraduate degree, Dennis is completing a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership through CMU Online.

As a working professional and father, Dennis values CMU Online’s flexibility, which allows him to balance career, family, and education.

“I do my coursework when the kids are asleep,” he said. “That’s my ‘me time’, when I can focus on what’s going to make me better and what’s important.”

Although he was nervous about returning to school, Dennis is proud he took the leap.

“Do this for you. Jump back in, the water is fine.”

Through his coursework, Dennis has developed new skills that strengthen his leadership approach at UWM, particularly in emotional intelligence and navigating change. The knowledge and expertise he is gaining are now being invested back into the company, helping his team and clients succeed.

“I’ve learned that a leader doesn’t manage, they help others unlock their ‘why,’” he said.

Dennis also took advantage of prior learning credit, earning 15 credits for his professional experience, an opportunity he calls “huge” in making his degree attainable.

“Four years can feel like a long time, but with prior learning credits, it’s not that far,” he said.

As he looks ahead to earning his degree and pursuing a master’s in leadership, Dennis is grateful to work for a company that supports his growth.

“UWM is an amazing company that has afforded me so many opportunities in life,” he said. “This partnership with CMU is just one more example of how they invest in their people.”
