Master’s in counseling program honored by ACES, recognizing innovative and exemplary program development in the education and supervision of counselors
The master’s in counseling program at Central Michigan University has been selected to receive the 2026 Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Robert Frank Outstanding Counselor Education Program Award: Master’s Program!
This national honor recognizes innovative and exemplary program development in education and supervision of counselors. Areas of innovation include counselor training, clinical supervision, practicum and internship, technology, evaluation and training methods, career development, and preparation for work with diverse and exceptional populations. Every award cycle, only one master’s-level and one doctoral-level counselor program is recognized throughout the entire nation!
CMU’s counseling program previously received the regional division award from the North Central ACES back in 2023.
“This award belongs to our entire counseling community,” says Dr. Allison Arnekrans, Professor of Counseling. “To our faculty and staff, current students, alumni, site supervisors, community partners, advisory committee members, and others who contribute to the preparation of our counselors, thank you.”
Department of Counseling, Education Leadership and Higher Education Chairperson, Dr. Sarah Marshall, adds praise for this recognition. “I see every day the tremendous amount of care that goes into creating an exceptional experience for our students,” says Marshall. “What continuously stands out to me is how deeply student-centered this [counseling] team is and how willing everyone is to go above and beyond to support our students and one another.”
ACES is a national division of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and is the premier professional organization dedicated specifically to advancing the quality of counselor education and supervision. ACES is committed to strengthening how counselors are trained and supported across the profession.
Arnekrans concludes, “This recognition affirms what we continually strive to accomplish: preparing counselors who are ethical, skilled, reflective, culturally responsive and ready to serve their communities.”
CMU’s counseling program offers Addiction, Clinical Mental Health, and School Counseling concentrations, and is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Our on-campus Center for Community Counseling and Development is run by students in the master’s of counseling program who offer in-person and remote counseling services to gain hands-on experience.
