The stories behind the stories: How Alisha Draper builds connection through communication

Leadership, mentorship and a people-first philosophy drive the college’s evolving communications strategy.

When Alisha Draper joined the College of Business Administration as director of marketing and communications, she stepped into a role that had never existed before. She saw an opportunity to build a communications approach that centered on people rather than promotion.

“My role is to help explain to the rest of the world why the College of Business is a great place to be,” she said. “I want prospective students to hear exactly what is happening here so they can decide if it is the right fit for them.”

From day one, Draper focused on telling clear, authentic stories about students, faculty, and the experiences that shape their time at CMU.

Building a space for student storytellers

One of Draper’s first initiatives was creating a student communications team. She developed a structure where students learn interviewing, writing, content planning and editorial feedback in real time.

“I want every student on the team to leave with more skills than they came with,” she said. “If I can help them feel more confident in their abilities, then I have done something meaningful.”

The students she mentors feel that impact. “I’ve worked as a student employee in the College of Business since my freshman year, and I immediately felt a shift when Alisha joined the team,” said senior marketing major Kennedy Burns. “She leads with encouragement, trust and incredible follow-through. I’ll always look back on my CBA experience with gratitude for her leadership.”

MBA student Anudeep Nanduri shares a similar experience. “Working with Alisha has been an incredible experience. She’s a great mentor, and I’ve learned how to think more creatively and collaborate with others.”

Leading through authenticity

Draper sees storytelling as a responsibility. She believes prospective students deserve honest insight into what they can expect at CMU.

“I never want to exaggerate anything,” she said. “I want students to understand the real experience here. If they take risks and get involved, they will find support and opportunities.”

Her approach has made an immediate impact on the college’s communication strategy.

“Alisha has had a tremendous impact on our storytelling since she arrived on campus,” said Dean Chris Moberg. “We are so fortunate she joined our leadership team in 2024.”

A life rooted in creativity

Away from her desk, Draper recharges through creative outlets. She plays piano, gardens, and spends time with her daughter. She is also pursuing a master’s degree in communication, reflecting her belief in the power of messages to shape behavior, community, and opportunity.

Strengthening the systems behind the stories

As she continues shaping the communication systems of the college, Draper is focused on long term clarity, efficiency and consistency. Her goal is to create processes that will serve the college well into the future and highlight the people who make CBA a supportive place to learn and teach.
