Distinguished Alumni Award

Marc Haxer, '75 MA '78, is a clinical speech-language pathologist recognized throughout the country for his expertise in voice and swallowing disorders.

He has presented extensively on topics in both areas and has been primary or co-author on several peer-reviewed articles on voice and swallowing.

He has been employed by the University of Michigan Health System for the past 17 years, where he holds joint appointments in the departments of speech-language pathology and otolaryngology/head and neck surgery. Also he is a clinical instructor for the position of speech-language pathology in the special education department at Eastern Michigan University.

Marc is a past president of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association and is a founding board member of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation.

Along with colleagues, he is an investigator on two National Institutes of Health grants studying the effects of chemotherapy and Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy on swallowing function in head and neck cancer patients.

Marc has been involved with CMU as a clinical consultant to the speech-language pathology faculty and staff, and he has supervised CMU speech-language pathology graduate student interns at the University of Michigan Health System. He also serves as a guest lecturer to the communication disorders department on topics of swallowing disorders, laryngectomy rehabilitation, and voice.
