What is your favorite memory of CMU? I have so many fond memories of CMU, including meeting some of my best friends. But one special memory I will always hold dear was representing our Public Relations Student Society of America chapter in Phoenix for the organization's national Leadership Rally. I presented best practices on how to lead and maintain one of the largest chapters in the nation, along with being part of a core group that helped initiate conversations around helping the industry become more diverse and inclusive.
What has been your coolest moment since graduation? The most meaningful is being able to blend my work life with my home life which has brought me a lot of fulfillment as a young professional with a growing family. Being able to include my family in work-related events, meetings and travel has made being a career-loving parent an enjoyable experience.
What are you proudest of? Experiencing the racial and social reckoning of 2020, I committed to becoming an inclusive and socially conscious leader who speaks truth to power and creates environments where all individuals are proud to be their full and authentic selves each and every day.
What advice would you give to new graduates? There is a quote by Maya Angelou I feel sums up any advice I would give to new graduates. It says, "You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don't make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can't take their eyes off of you."
What has your work life taught you? When you start your career, it's important to raise your hand and try new things. But, as you become more experienced, it's important to not overextend yourself with tasks, meetings and commitments that serve little purpose. I believe that aligning your work with what is most important to you will allow you to work smart with ease and confidence. I created a "work philosophy" to ground me and keep me focused no matter the season.
What about CMU helped you succeed? CMU provided a number of opportunities to help me grow as a leader, from leading student-run organizations to interning in a variety of departments across campus and beyond. My professors and advisers helped me become clear on my goals and made sure I had the experience I needed to be successful after graduation.
