The Department of Mathematics at CMU is proud to welcome Dr. Lino Guajardo as a new Assistant Professor. With a deep passion for both teaching and research, Dr. Guajardo brings a unique perspective shaped by their personal journey and scholarly expertise.
“My identity is important to me as both an educator and a scholar,” they shared. “I have great pride in being a first-generation college student, queer, and a person of color in higher education.”

Dr. Guajardo earned their Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Texas State University, where they also received national recognition as a 2024–25 Spencer Dissertation Fellow from the National Academy of Education. Their research centers on the teaching and learning of mathematical proof, work that blends both cognitive and social dimensions.
“At the cognitive level, I investigate how students read and understand proof and how we can support them in these activities,” they explained. “At the social level, my work is about equity, highlighting students’ lived experiences and pushing against harmful norms and narratives in the mathematical community.”
This dual focus drives their commitment to creating inclusive spaces in mathematics. “I hope through my research, we can help all students become mathematicians and make sure all can succeed, not just the ones with the most privilege,” they said.
Their dedication extends into the classroom, where their teaching philosophy emphasizes care, accessibility, and empowerment. “I take this into my teaching by being there for my students every step of the way and providing as much support as I can in their learning. Ensuring that all voices are heard and a comfortable learning environment is created.”
When asked why they chose CMU, Dr. Guajardo pointed to the community. “I chose CMU because of the dedicated faculty and the welcoming community. The faculty truly care about the success of their students, and the smaller community allows for richer connections to be made in the classroom. CMU also holds strong in standing for what is just and equitable, even during uncertain times caused by the political landscape.”
Outside of their academic work, Dr. Guajardo finds joy in spending time with their fiancé and their two cats, Mr. Bradshaw and Toffee. They also enjoy walking, playing video and board games, and working on puzzles.
The Department is excited to welcome Dr. Guajardo to CMU, where their scholarship, teaching, and advocacy will undoubtedly enrich both the campus community and the field of mathematics education.
