Teaching mathematics at the college level takes more than knowing the material; it takes understanding how students learn. That’s the idea behind Central Michigan University’s new Graduate Certificate in Teaching Collegiate Mathematics, launching in Fall 2026.

The 9-credit program is designed for anyone who teaches, or wants to teach, mathematics to college students or adult learners. That includes current instructors at community colleges, tribal colleges, or universities, as well as high school teachers interested in exploring the teaching and learning of advanced mathematics.

“This new 9-credit graduate certificate is a unique opportunity for current mathematics instructors to learn research-based knowledge on the teaching and learning of advanced mathematics,” said Katrina Piatek-Jimenez, mathematics education faculty member.

Instead of requiring years of study like a Ph.D. in mathematics education, the certificate offers a focused and flexible way to build teaching expertise. Students will dive into the latest research on mathematics education, explore active learning strategies like group problem-solving and discussion-based instruction, and learn how to use technology to engage students in new ways.

The program was created in response to growing interest in improving how mathematics is taught at the college level. “Not everybody has the time or interest to pursue a Ph.D.,” said the program’s faculty team. “This certificate offers practical tools that can help instructors become even more effective in the classroom.”

Students will work closely with CMU’s mathematics education faculty and may find new opportunities for collaboration down the road. Depending on their current role, graduates may earn continuing education credits, qualify for pay increases, or open doors to new teaching positions.

“The mathematics education faculty within the department are dedicated to improving the teaching of collegiate mathematics,” said the department. “This certificate helps bring more educators into that mission.”

Faculty member Christine Phelps-Gregory, who will teach MTH 762 in Spring 2027, added, “I’m excited to work with a new group of students who want to learn about and improve the teaching of collegiate mathematics.”

The first cohort begins Fall 2026. Those interested should contact Graduate Coordinator Jordan Watts at mthgrad@cmich.edu.
