Jon Humiston '98, '08, '17
In over 20 years of work, Dr. Jon Humiston has remained committed to the development of Central Michigan University both academically and professionally. First receiving their bachelor's degree in 1998, they later earned their master's in 2008 and Doctorate in Education in 2017, all from CMU.
Throughout Jon's career, they held many positions at CMU, including Director for the Office of Gay and Lesbian Programs, Assistant Affirmative Action Officer, Ombud's Officer, Assistant Director of Undergraduate Academic Services, and Executive Assistant to the Provost. Holding positions of varying levels on campus has given Jon a unique perspective and allowed the voices of vulnerable communities, particularly the LGBTQ+ community, to be heard. Currently, they are an Adjunct Faculty member in Educational Leadership and they write, edit, and develop online learning modules related to perseity, equity and inclusion for a company called ansrsource.
Dr. Humiston has been invited to give national presentations at the Higher Learning Commission Peer Review Training, the Higher Learning Commission Annual Conference, NASPA Region IV-E (4-E), IUPUI's Assessment Institute and several other national organizations where they have spoken on topics of inclusion and education.
Jon has made a lasting impression on CMU's administration. They have advocated to recognize same-sex partner benefits, sought the inclusion of gender identity and expression in the CMU non-discrimination policy, and authored several nationally recognized articles. The most recent focused on creating inclusive environments in the online classroom, which turned out to be timely. They have also taken the time to speak in countless classrooms, with student organizations and at CMU events, encouraging others to listen and learn.
Students, faculty, staff, and community members have all been impacted by Jon's commitment and advocacy for LGBTQ+ communities on campus, locally, and at a national level.
