How to Apply as an International Student

Each year, we welcome nearly 600 students from more than 60 countries around the world. Whether you plan to study at the undergraduate or graduate level, you’ll find a supportive community and a home away from home.

Requirements

The application process depends on which program you’re applying to. Please refer to the undergraduate or graduate admission process pages for specific information on your program.

Transcripts

Official transcripts are required for admission and are submitted directly to CMU from your previous school. Transcripts submitted by the student are considered to be unofficial. See "Send to:" below for more information.

English proficiency

We also require students to demonstrate English proficiency, unless from a country where English is considered a primary language. Students have several options for showing English proficiency. TOEFL (79), IELTS (6.5), PTE (53), and Duolingo (100) are the most common, however, there are other options as well.

View the list of countries where the English proficiency exam is waived.
