Earning college credit in high school
Dual enrollment
Students interested in dual enrollment will work with their counselor to choose the right CMU course(s) each semester, ensuring they are satisfying all of your high school’s requirements.
Students must meet the following criteria in order to dual enroll:
- Have a high school GPA of a 2.8 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
- Get approval for dual enrollment, course selection and the school district tuition contribution (if applicable) from their high school counselor or principal.
As the only university in Michigan to operate an island research station, we offer the unique opportunity for high school students to spend part of their summer dual-enrolled on Beaver Island!

Testing for college credit
Advanced Placement
At CMU, students can earn credit in over 25 Advanced Placement (AP) subjects by achieving a score of 3 or higher on the corresponding AP exam. To ensure that their scores are sent to CMU for evaluation, students should indicate their intention by using the designated code, 1106. If you are seeking detailed information about which AP classes are accepted for CMU credit, learn more about advanced placement.
International Baccalaureate
By taking the International Baccalaureate higher level exam in 15+ subjects, students could earn 3 or more credits per exam. To get credit, their official scores must be sent directly to CMU by an IB office (New York, Geneva or London).
College Level Examination Program
Students can test year-round for CLEP exams, but most students take these types of examinations after they’ve already been admitted to CMU. The scores required to earn credit will vary by course.
Early Middle College
Early Middle College is a program that enables students to earn their high school diploma and up to 60 college credits through an extra fifth year of high school. EMC students are considered new freshmen if they enroll at CMU the term after they finish their EMC program or courses, making them eligible for freshmen merit and competitive scholarships.
