Major in Graphic Design

Do you want to shape the world around you through visual art?

As a graphic design student, you will combine image-making and language for just that purpose. Here at CMU, you'll learn the skills necessary to be an effective visual communicator and prepare to be an active and mindful member of the creative community.

You will be provided a broad foundation of the history, theories, and contemporary issues facing design while using the latest technologies. You will learn how to carry out research, manage processes, and execute communication strategies with focused, hands-on instruction in typography, image development, and time-based graphics. This empowers you, as a graduate, to create work that communicates to a variety of audiences through multiple platforms, including print, web, and interactive media.

You will be a part of our department's active design student group that organizes speakers, workshops, and an annual trip out of state to visit professional design studios.

When you graduate with a BFA in Graphic Design you will be able to work in a variety of spaces, including print, editorial, advertising, web, and interactive fields. Alumni of our program are employed around the state and across the country in all areas of design and serve a diverse group of industries, institutions, and nonprofits such as AMPM Advertising - Detroit, Syd Lee Advertising, Amazon, Frost Burn Studios, Quicken Loans, Liberty Mutual, Synergy, & Hello World to name a few.
