Art & Design Scholarships

We offer more than $40,000 in scholarships annually!

We are committed to helping you invest in your future. That’s why we offer a variety of scholarship awards at both the university and department levels. This includes four scholarships that are available to incoming freshmen and transfer students! Please see eligibility requirements below: 

Williams & Koerner Scholarship

One $2000 award*

First preference given to students enrolled in the Multimedia Design minor. Second preference will be given to students enrolled in Graphic Design and/or Animation majors. All art majors may apply.

Eligibility:

  • Junior or Senior Standing at CMU for the 2022-23 academic year
  • Minimum GPA in Art of 3.0
  • Must be a full-time student.
  • Non-renewable

Stephen L. Barstow Memorial Art Prize

Five $2,500 awards*

Awarded based on financial need with an emphasis on promoting Native Americans into the Arts.

Eligibility:  

  • Meet Office of Financial Aid requirements for financial aid.
  • Signed Art major (except incoming Freshman or Transfer students).
  • Minimum GPA in Art of 2.5 for freshmen, 3.0 for all other students.
  • Previous recipients may reapply.

Katherine Ardis Ux Art Scholarship for Graduate Studies

Four $2,500 awards*

To provide support to Senior Art and Design major or alumni who intend to conduct research or further study in the field of art or design in a Masters program or another type of structured Post-Baccalaureate program.

Eligibility:  

  • Senior standing at CMU for the 2022-23 academic year
  • Signed Art major

Stephen L. Barstow Native American Prize

Four $2,200 awards*

Preference is given to Native Americans, although all art majors* may apply.

Eligibility:

  • A tribal ID from a State or Federally recognized Native American tribe (if applicable).
  • Signed Art major *
  • Signed Art major (except incoming Freshman or Transfer students)
  • Minimum GPA in Art of 2.5 for freshmen, 3.0 for all other levels. 
  • Previous recipients may reapply.

Evelyn Frye-Smith Scholarship

Two $1,000 awards*

Eligibility:

  • Freshmen, Sophomore, or Junior standing at CMU for the 2022-23 academic yearU
  • Signed Art major*
  • Minimum GPA in Art of 3.5
  • Previous recipients may reapply.

Frances E. Fitch Art Scholarship

One $1,000 undergraduate award*

Eligibility:

  • Junior or Senior standing at CMU for the 2022-23 academic year
  • Minimum GPA in Art of 3.5
  • Previous recipients are not eligible to reapply for this scholarship.

David R. Fisher Memorial Award 

One $1000 undergraduate award*

Eligibility:

  • Junior or Senior Standing at CMU for the 2022-23 academic year
  • Meet Office of Financial Aid requirements for financial aid.
  • Signed Art major* 
  • Minimum GPA in Art of 3.0.
  • Must be a full-time student.
  • Interest in sculpture or ceramics

John W. & Marilyn D. Richards Scholarship 

One $2,000 undergraduate award*

Eligibility:

  • Junior or Senior Standing at CMU
  • Signed Art major (except incoming Transfer students)
  • Minimum GPA in Art of 3.0
  • Meet Office of Financial Aid requirements for financial aid
  • Must be a full-time student
  • Interest in sculpture or ceramics

Evelyn Frye-Smith Summer Workshop Award

Two $1000 awards*

1-week summer workshop (including room & board) at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN

Eligibility:

  • Junior or Senior standing at CMU. 
  • Signed Art major*
  • Minimum GPA in Art of 3.0.
  • Must be a full-time student.
  • *Updated amounts and full eligibility requirements are listed on the current year application 

(*) All incoming freshman or transfer students intending to major in Art are eligible

Art and Design Study Away Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded in the Fall for the following Summer:

Gilbert A. Maxwell Endowed Award in Art for International / National Study

Three $1000 awards*

Eligibility:

  • Signed Art major
  • Junior status (at the time of application)
  • Must be a full-time student from Aug. 2021 - May 2022
  • Non-renewable

Lon Ferguson Memorial & Friends of Art & Design Travel Endowment for Study Away Experience

One $500 award*

Eligibility:

  • Signed Art major
  • Minimum GPA 3.0
  • Non-renewable

UNIVERSITY-LEVEL SCHOLARSHIPS:

Incoming freshmen who have applied to CMU are automatically considered for CMU's  Merit Scholarships. Submit a complete application including all supporting materials by December 1 for priority consideration.
