A native of suburban Detroit, Don discovered his love for broadcasting at CMU, where he first picked up a camera at the student-run stations MHTV and WCMU Public Television. What began as curiosity quickly turned into a calling. By his sophomore year, he was already freelancing for ESPN on USFL games—marking the start of what would become a legendary career behind the lens.

Since his first NFL game in 1986, 11 time Emmy Award winner Don Cornelli has become one of the most iconic handheld camera operators in sports television history. Over the past four decades, he has shot 25 Super Bowls, 35 consecutive NFC Championship games, and worked as a key part of the NFL on FOX main crew since its inception in 1994. Known for capturing unforgettable moments—like Plaxico Burress’s game-winning touchdown in Super Bowl XLII—Don's keen instincts and flawless timing have made his shots synonymous with the drama and beauty of professional sports. Beyond the NFL, he has brought his talent to nearly every major sporting event imaginable, from the Masters and NBA Finals to the Olympics and FIFA World Cup.

But Cornelli’s legacy is not only defined by what he captured on camera—it’s also defined by who he is off of it. Admired by colleagues for his humility, integrity, and work ethic, Don is described as the “GOAT of handheld operators” and “a true professional” whose presence elevates every crew he's a part of. Despite the physical toll of the job and over 200 days of travel per year, he continues to bring energy and precision to every game, driven by a deep love for his craft and the support of his wife Karen and their children, Andrew and Sara.

From the cable rooms of CMU to the biggest stages in sports, Don Cornelli has proven that excellence comes from instinct, preparation, and heart. His story serves as a powerful reminder to young Chippewas that greatness isn’t limited to the spotlight—it’s also found behind the scenes, in the quiet pursuit of doing something you love, better than anyone else in the world.
