Policies
Finding internships can be a daunting process so start early! Use the resources provided, including career services, student groups, and the Internship Directors. Students are strongly advised to be proactive in finding an internship. For MKT 490, contact Jeff Hoyle/Marketing (hoyle1ja@cmich.edu) or Fred Lawrence/Logistics (lawre1fl@cmich.edu). For HSA 490, contact Nizar "Nick" Hussein/Hospitality (husse1nk@cmich.edu).
The intern student may receive credit for one additional course while completing the internship requirement. This requires permission from the Internship Director. NOTE: 3 credit hours of MKT/HSA 490 does not make a student eligible for financial aid.
The intern student may receive credit for two additional courses when enrolled in a co-op program. This requires permission from the Internship Director. NOTE: 3 credit hours of MKT/HSA 490 does not make a student eligible for financial aid.
It is a requirement that each intern student is paid for the work performed. The rare exception for this requirement must be approved in advance by the Internship Director, with the onus placed on the intern student to justify why such an exception should be granted.
It is a requirement that each intern student complete 480 hours with the same company in their internship program. A maximum of 40 hours per week can be counted toward this requirement.
If an internship opportunity does not meet the requirements outlined, the intern student is REQUIRED to meet with the Internship Director to discuss the possibility of approval.
The intern student must immediately DISCONTINUE pursuing other internship opportunities upon acceptance of an internship. This would include, but is not limited to, interviewing with other companies, applying to other companies, etc. Accepting a position and then declining it for another opportunity is considered unethical and IS NOT condoned by the MHL Internship Program. If it is discovered an intern student accepted a position then declined it for another, the intern student will be DROPPED from enrollment in the course.
The intern student must have the opportunity approved by the appropriate Internship Director BEFORE accepting the internship. Failure to follow instructions could result in an internship not being granted, thus NO internship credit would be earned in MKT/HSA 490 and graduation status would be affected.
The intern student must be enrolled in the MKT 490 or HSA 490 Internship course BEFORE the internship begins. The intern student must verify official enrollment in the course via Blackboard at least one week in advance of the internship start date. Contact the Internship Director immediately if not enrolled. Failure to do so will likely result in the intern student not receiving credit for the course.
MKT 490 and HSA 490 are courses with assignments. Assignments begin the first day of the internship. The final grade is determined by the employer evaluation and the quality of the intern student's work on submitted assignments. Hence, the grade earned in the course is determined by the deliverables at work (employer evaluation) and the deliverables to the Internship Director (good projects = good grades and poor projects = poor grades).
The intern student is not permitted to change the internship company once the internship begins. If a change is needed, the intern student should contact the Internship Director immediately. A meeting will be arranged and any changes authorized. The intern student should always contact the Internship Director to discuss any issues.
