Economics Department

Curious about how the world works? Economics helps you understand how decisions, incentives and markets shape the world around you while strengthening your analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Economics in the real world

Economists help organizations understand trends, evaluate policies, forecast outcomes and make informed decisions. Economics graduates work across business, government, nonprofits and research organizations because the skills they develop apply in almost every sector.

Our students have pursued internships and opportunities with organizations including the Michigan Citizens Research Council, government agencies and research-focused organizations. Others continue into graduate and doctoral programs, using economics as a foundation for graduate study in areas like law, policy, analytics and research.

Where could economics take you?

Economics can take you in a lot of directions. Whether you're exploring majors, thinking about graduate school or looking for a program that helps you understand how the world works, we're here to help you figure out what fits.

Learn to think differently

Economics teaches you to look beyond surface-level answers. You’ll explore why markets behave the way they do, how incentives influence decisions and what happens when policy, business and human behavior intersect. Along the way, you’ll build skills in critical thinking, data analysis and problem solving that employers value across industries.

Some students are drawn to economics because they enjoy numbers and research. Others are interested in law, government, global issues or understanding why the world works the way it does. What connects them is curiosity.

As on ecomincs student, you’ll  learn in smaller classes where faculty know your name, challenge your thinking and help you connect ideas to real-world situations.
