Use your experience to move forward faster

Professional certifications and prior experience may help you reduce the time and cost required to complete your MBA.

Depending on your background, you may be eligible for graduate credit through certification-to-credit pathways or credit-by-exam opportunities. These options recognize the knowledge and skills you’ve already developed while helping you save time and money.

Already earned an HR certification? Your professional experience may help you move through the MBA program faster.

Students in the MBA with a human resources emphasis who hold qualifying certifications may receive up to six graduate credits through CMU’s prior learning assessment process.

Eligible certifications include:

  • PHR (Professional in Human Resources)
  • SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources)
  • SHRM-CP (Certified Professional)
  • SHRM-SCP (Senior Certified Professional)

Approved students may receive credit for:

  • MGT 643 Human Resource Management
  • MGT 647 Employee Selection and Evaluation

To qualify:

  • Certification must be current at the time of application
  • Certification must remain valid for at least six months after applying for credit
  • Students must submit proof of certification

Questions about certification eligibility, the prior learning assessment process or associated fees? Contact the MBA program at mba@cmich.edu or visit CMU’s Credit for Prior Learning website for more information.

Some professional certifications may qualify MBA students for credit-by-exam opportunities within the project management emphasis.

Approved certifications currently include:

  • PMI Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • Google Project Management Professional Certificate
  • Select Six Sigma certifications

Eligible students may receive:

  • Credit-by-exam consideration for BUS 501
  • Credit-by-exam consideration for BUS 503 for qualifying Six Sigma certifications

Credit-by-exam allows students to earn course credit by demonstrating strength in the subject matter. Credits earned through examination receive credit, but not a course grade.

To begin the review process:

  • Submit your certification to mba@cmich.edu.
  • Certifications must remain valid for at least six months from the submission date
  • Eligible students will be guided through the credit-by-exam process and required forms

Exploring an accelerated MBA?

Current CMU undergraduate students may be able to begin MBA coursework before finishing their bachelor’s degree.

Depending on your academic plan, some graduate credits may count toward both degrees, helping you save time and reduce overall tuition costs. The earlier you start the conversation, the more options may be available.

Support that stays personal

You'll work closely with faculty, advisors and program staff throughout your MBA experience. Whether you’re planning courses, exploring career goals or balancing graduate school with work and life responsibilities, you’ll have people invested in your growth and success.
