Issues in Wilderness and Remote Medicine

Central Michigan University (CMU), CMU Online and Wilderness Medical Associates® (WMA) have partnered to provide three semester hours of credit for Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification. WFR is the ideal medical training for outdoor educators, guides, SAR team members, and others who work or play in remote areas. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical, including the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments.​

Wilderness Medical Associates International is an organization devoted to the development of remote and practical medicine. WMA is made up of medical and rescue professionals, researchers, experienced educators, and advocates for healthcare in remote settings and hostile environments. Their cutting-edge curriculum is overseen and continually revised by a committee of medical practitioners and has been taught on all seven continents.

Value-Added Benefits for Your Wilderness Medical Training

  • Eligibility for teacher certificate renewal credit and/or salary increase within your school district

Registration Information

You must complete these steps within six weeks of the completion of your training.

Upon successful completion of one of the approved Wilderness Medical Associates training, permission of the CMU instructor, and verification of completion of training, you may register for three (3) semester hours of credit through Central Michigan University:

Undergraduate credit: RPL 400AA (3 semester hours)
Graduate credit: RPL 600AC (3 semester hours)

WMA courses that qualify for the CMU credit include:
  • Wilderness First Responder
  • Wilderness First Responder with EMR Option
  • Wilderness Advanced Life Support
  • Wilderness EMT Upgrade
  • Wilderness Medical Elective

Registration Information

Step 1. Complete one of the qualified Wilderness Medical Courses. Not registered yet? Visit the WMA website to view the course offering schedule online.
Step 2. Receive permission from CMU Instructor and verification of completion of training through WMA.
Step 3. Register for CMU credit by completing the online registration form.

Step 4. If not currently admitted to CMU, complete the Non-Degree Graduate Application and pay the $50 admission fee.
