Central Bound Frequently Asked Questions
Getting started with Central Bound
How do I apply, and when should I do it?
You’ll complete an application to CMU and your partner community college (if you’re not already enrolled there). We recommend applying early in your academic journey to give yourself plenty of time to prepare, meet with an advisor, and explore financial aid.
I’m a non-traditional student—can I still apply to Central Bound?
Central Bound students can take classes on campus (in Mt. Pleasant) or through CMU Online. With three semesters a year and multiple terms (for online classes) within each semester, Central Bound students have the flexibility to enroll in classes that fit their schedule. Review the academic calendars for more detailed semester information.
Is Central Bound open to all majors?
Yes! Central Bound is open to all undergraduate majors at CMU. Keep in mind that not every major is available both online and on campus. Explore major options and program details on our program finder page.

How do I know which partner community college to choose?
You’ll select your partner community college during the application process. Currently, our only partner school is Lansing Community College. As more schools are added, you may want to choose the partner college closest to where you live for the most convenient experience.
Paying for your education
How is tuition calculated between CMU and my community college?
Tuition and fees are assessed by each institution based on where you take your courses. You’ll receive separate bills from CMU and your partner community college. Each school has its own billing system, so be sure to review CMU’s Student Account Services page and your partner school’s payment information.
Can I use financial aid at both schools?
Yes! CMU has a financial aid agreement with each partner community college, allowing Central Bound students to access and use financial aid at both schools when they’re enrolled in courses at both institutions.
What’s the drop/add course deadline?
CMU offers multi-semester registration, with registration typically opening each February for summer, fall, and spring semesters. Drop and withdrawal deadlines are listed for each course in the Course Search and Registration portal.
Credits, GPA, and transfer details
How is my GPA calculated if I’m enrolled in both schools?
Your grade point average (GPA) will be calculated separately at each school. Your community college GPA does not transfer to CMU. Once you begin taking CMU courses, your CMU GPA starts at 0.0 and builds from there.
How do my credits transfer from my community college to CMU?
At the end of each semester, you’ll need to request that your official transcript be sent from your partner college’s Registrar to CMU. Once received, CMU’s Registrar’s Office will evaluate and apply your transfer credits to your CMU record.
What is a “reverse transfer,” and how does it work?
Reverse transfer allows credits earned at CMU to be sent back to your community college so you can complete an associate degree while continuing toward your bachelor’s degree. Students typically initiate this process through CMU’s Registrar’s Office.
Does Central Bound accept the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA)?
Yes. As long as you’re following the agreement closely, your MTA credits will be accepted. It’s still a good idea to meet with an academic advisor to ensure you’re taking courses that fit your major and may “double-count” toward multiple requirements.
Is there a maximum number of credits I can earn while in Central Bound?
There is no set minimum or maximum number of credits. Central Bound is designed so that you can work with your advisor to choose the best path to graduation based on your goals. Advisors help you save time and money by identifying the right courses for your degree and avoiding unnecessary credits.
Are there specific courses I need to take to stay on track in Central Bound?
There’s no set list of required courses but following the transfer guide for your major—or working with your advisor—is the best way to stay on track. Advisors can help you select courses that align with your academic goals and program requirements.
