Master of Arts in Creative Writing

Develop your talent and build a portfolio of short stories, novel excerpts, poems, creative nonfiction essays or a combination of these genres. A graduate degree in Creative Writing will prepare you to teach English at a community college, publish your work, or apply to MFA and PhD programs. For students already teaching English at the secondary level, a graduate degree in Creative Writing will enhance your study in the discipline.

Paying for graduate school

The English Department offers two different kinds of graduate assistantships to qualified students pursuing the MA in Creative Writing. All graduate assistants receive a tuition waiver and a stipend. Assistantships may be renewed for a second year. Please click on the links below for further information on how to apply for a graduate assistantship.

In addition to assistantships, the university awards a number of graduate fellowships. For information about fellowships, the student should contact the Office of Research and Graduate Studies.
