Central Michigan University is opening new pathways into one of Michigan’s most exciting industries – casino and resort operations.
Beginning Fall 2025, students can choose from two new career-focused options: the casino gaming operations certificate or the casino gaming operations minor. Both are designed to complement business-focused majors and help students stand out in competitive job markets – without adding semesters to their degree plans.
“The goal isn’t to train students to be pit bosses or game dealers,” said Nick Hussein, marketing, hospitality, and logistics faculty member. “It’s to give them a real-world understanding of how the casino industry works – because whether you’re managing a hotel, working in sales, or leading a team in HR, casinos are complex businesses. This certificate helps you speak the language of the industry and add value from day one.”
Developed in partnership between the department of marketing, hospitality and logistics and the department of recreation, parks and leisure services administration, the program include courses in professional selling, event management, and casino operations – emphasizing business strategy, customer experience, and cross-department coordination in integrated resort settings. Students in the minor complete additional electives that deepen their understanding of the industry and build their professional skillset.
“Every job in a casino-resort – whether it’s accounting, logistics, guest services, or marketing – has a layer of complexity that’s unique to the industry,” said Hussein. “This program introduces students to those nuances
Students curious about the industry are invited to join The Chippewa Experience, a guided, behind-the-scenes tour of Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort on Friday, April 18.
Organized by management faculty member Ken Williams, the visit explores how departments like gaming, hotel operations, entertainment, and culinary services come together to deliver a seamless guest experience. Students will meet industry professionals, tour facilities, and gain insight into career paths that support large-scale, integrated hospitality environments.
The tour is open to all majors and offers a way to learn more about the casino resort industry – it is a great way for students to see if it could be a career path they’d want to explore in more depth through the certificate or minor. Interested students should RSVP or email Ken Williams for more details.
Both the certificate and minor were built to fit into a standard four-year plan, making them a smart add-on for students who want to specialize without falling behind. These credentials reflect CMU’s commitment to applied learning, professional development, and meaningful career preparation.
“This new program helps our students stand out,” said Dr. Richard Divine, marketing, hospitality, and logistics department chair. “The minor and certificate both offer a mix of classroom learning and real-world exposure – and give students a compelling story to tell in job interviews.”
Students can begin registering for the casino gaming operations certificate and minor starting Fall 2025. For questions about the program or to explore how they might fit into your academic plan, contact Nick Hussein.
