Beginning today, Central Michigan University students, faculty and staff can use their Central ID on their iPhones, Apple Watches, or Android phones. This new contactless option provides convenient and safe access to campus buildings, meal plans, and more.
The Central Mobile ID works everywhere the physical Central ID card does. Users simply place their compatible device near a reader to enter residence halls, access the Student Activity Center, receive student admission to athletics events, use meal plans and FLEX dollars, borrow books and course materials from Park Library, and more.
“Individuals always carry their mobile phone,” said Janel Taylor, CentralCard Office coordinator. “Moving the Central ID to digital has so many advantages, and we’re excited to bring this new exciting technology to CMU.”
While physical ID cards are still being offered at this time, the move from physical cards to a contactless Central Mobile ID allows for transactions that are safe and convenient. Additionally, CMU can issue IDs remotely without the users needing to physically visit the CentralCard Office to receive a printed card, creating a safer, more cost-effective, and more environmentally friendly process.
When students, faculty, and staff elect to use the new Central Mobile ID, their physical card is permanently deactivated for security purposes. The Central Mobile ID is also protected by two-factor authentication to ensure only the authorized user can access their own account. Transact is the campus credential solution provider offering NFC-enabled digital IDs for CMU.
There is minimal setup required to use the Central Mobile ID and most users will be able to begin using it in minutes. For more information and to get started, visit the CentralCard webpage.
