Virtual Reality Simulators

CMU_Health_Sag_0680-01-2019_sjpIn 2011, Covenant HealthCare Simulation Center expanded its facilities to include a dedicated laparoscopic training lab. Serving primarily our General Surgery and Obstetrics/Gynecology residency programs, the lab is equipped with several laparoscopic training boxes, towers, and a virtual reality simulator. Our residents complete the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) curriculum offered through the Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).

Simbionix  LAP Mentor

This simulator allows highly realistic virtual reality training in laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery.  Learners can practice hysterectomy, appendectomy, bowel surgery and other complex tasks using a minimally invasive approach.  A separate console allows a faculty member to assist a learner, in real time, during the surgical training.  The simulator has haptic capabilities (tissue can be “felt” when manipulated).  Virtual reality goggles can create an entire operating room and OR team, even for the single learner!

Simbionix GI Mentor

This simulator allows realistic virtual reality training in multiple endoscopic procedures, such as colonoscopy, and flexible bronchoscopy.  This is the current state-of-the-art trainer for this procedure.   Our surgical residents must all pass a Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery (FES) exam in order to matriculate. Our simulator is the same equipment on which they will be tested.
