Jacob Boersma, MD
Medical School: Michigan State University College of Human Medicine
Professional Career Interests: General Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery
Why did you choose CMU: I was very impressed by the diversity that was represented within the residency training programs at CMU. I appreciated that the program was close to my home town of Grand Rapids, MI. Everyone I met during the interview was very welcoming. My perception of the program was that I would gain a well-rounded general surgery training in a community style program that also had the benefits/resources of being linked with a larger institution.
Personal Hobbies/Interests: I enjoy spending time with my wife. Lately, I have gotten quite involved with home renovation projects as my wife and I recently bought a new house in the Saginaw area. I enjoy working out and playing recreational league softball. I enjoy camping, hiking, backpacking, and traveling to National Parks (when I have time apart from residency).
Favorite Things to do around Michigan: Michigan has some great spots for downhill and cross country skiing, both of which I enjoy. Some of my favorite places to visit are in the Upper Peninsula, north of the Mackinaw Bridge, which is a 3 hour drive from Saginaw. I also really enjoy being out on the water, whether it be fishing for walleye/salmon/largemouth bass on Lake Michigan or Lake Erie, kayaking, boating, or waterskiing. Michigan also had a lot of really good craft breweries/distilleries, so make sure to check these out while you are here.
