Physical Therapy Program Houghton Campus

Michigan Tech partnership information

General information

We are collaborating with Michigan Technological University (MTU) to offer our Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) degree on the campus of MTU in Houghton, Michigan. The program is offered through interactive distance-learning technologies that connect the Mt. Pleasant and Houghton sites together. The first class of students to participate in this collaboration started the DPT program in May of 2014.

The Houghton site is an integral part of our Physical Therapy Program and is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education as part of the CMU program. There are 12 students admitted to the Houghton site each year. Students admitted for the Houghton site take the first summer of classes on CMU's main campus but the remainder of classes are taken through a distance-learning format in our dedicated facilities on the campus of Michigan Technological University.

Students completing the program at the Houghton site will receive their DPT degree from Central Michigan University. Most lectures are presented on the CMU campus by CMU faculty and transmitted in real time to MTU through interactive distance learning technology. Depending on faculty locations, some lectures may be presented at MTU and transmitted to the Mt. Pleasant campus. CMU will have physical therapy faculty members at the Houghton site to supervise all physical therapy lab experiences. The Houghton site also has a faculty member who serves as a Site Director and another faculty member serving as a Regional Clinical Coordinator for the Upper Peninsula region of Michigan.

Admission policy

The policies for recruitment and admission are the same for both the CMU and MTU sites. Students applying to the extension program will be admitted to the program following the same evaluation and selection procedures as the students in the existing program.

The program uses PTCAS for the admissions process, and the criteria and processes are the same for all students applying to the program. Students applying to the CMU DPT program are asked to identify their preference for either of the sites. They are also given the option to be considered for only one of the locations. The procedure followed for all students is:

  1. All students will be evaluated using the same criteria and assigned a point total.
  2. Students will be ranked in the order of their point totals.
  3. Students at each site will be offered positions in the program in the order of their point totals.
