Our new name
Introducing the Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine at Central Michigan University
In November 2025, Central Michigan University announced an exciting and momentous milestone for medical education, training and delivery in mid-Michigan. The university’s largest clinical partners, Covenant HealthCare and MyMichigan Health made philanthropic commitments totaling $80 million in support of the university’s Advancing Health Together Initiative. These transformative gifts are the largest in CMU history and will have a lasting impact on CMU and medical education in our state.
In acknowledgement of the generosity of these partners, the CMU Board of Trustees has adopted the following names for our medical school and its new Saginaw home:
- The Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine at Central Michigan University
- The CMU MyMichigan Health Medical Education Building (coming soon!)
This investment in our mission signifies the confidence our partners have in our outstanding educational programming and the high-quality, compassionate care our students and graduates provide. We are proud to carry their names as a part of our college, and we look forward to generations of future partnership with both entities.
FAQs
Is the College of Medicine now owned by Covenant HealthCare?
No, the College of Medicine remains part of Central Michigan University, a regional public comprehensive university guided by the Central Michigan University Board of Trustees.
Our College will continue to follow the same CMU policies, procedures and brand standards we are known for and have built our reputation upon.
Naming a college in recognition of a large donor is typical practice in higher education. For example, on CMU’s campus, our health professions programs are part of The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions.
Our medical education programs will be part of the Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine at Central Michigan University, and we will eventually call the CMU MyMichigan Health Medical Education building our physical home – but we will always be a college within Central Michigan University.
What does it mean to be a named college or to have a named building?
Naming rights are often established when a benefactor believes strongly in an organization’s mission and provides significant philanthropic support as an investment in the organization’s future. For our college, these prestigious names signify a deeper commitment from our partners to work together to advance medical education, research and community health in our region.
How will this change affect our identity and our mission?
Our name has changed, but our mission and our commitment to our learners have not. Our faculty and staff will continue to serve our students, academic partners, clinical affiliates, and the broader community with excellence and compassion.
Our new name and enhanced partnerships with Covenant HealthCare and MyMichigan Health will improve our recognition and visibility while strengthening our recruitment efforts, research opportunities and overall reputation.
Will our students be graduates of CMU or Covenant HealthCare?
Our LCME-accredited medical education program will remain a part of Central Michigan University. CMU will continue to confer our degrees, and our students will be graduates of Central Michigan University. The diplomas our students receive upon graduation will feature the Central Michigan University seal and the name Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine at Central Michigan University.
What will our students’ white coats say?
The College will be updating all current students’ white coats with a new lockup featuring the CMU Action C and the name Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine.
Will there be changes to our branding and marketing?
Our college will continue to follow the established brand standards of Central Michigan University. Using the approved fonts and colors, you will see updated lockups and logos incorporating the new names throughout our print and digital materials. These will roll out gradually to ensure accuracy and consistency. Support and additional resources will be available throughout this transition.
