Secondary Education Majors and Minors
Students in the secondary education certification program choose from a variety of majors and minors. At Central Michigan University, we offer secondary education certification in the following areas listed below.
Learn to teach pre-adolescent students as they develop more independence and move between classrooms for different subjects.
Select two of these Grades 5-9 minors (one if you are a special education major):
- English Language Arts
- English Learners
- Mathematics
- Social Studies
Learn to teach adolescent students as they exhibit more independence, increase subject matter knowledge, and develop into young adults.
Select two of the Grades 7-12 minors (one if you are a special education major):
- English Language Arts
- English Learners
- Mathematics
- Social Studies
Focus on one subject matter area that certifies you to teach across multiple middle and high school grade levels.
Select one of these Grade 5-12 majors:
- English Language Arts
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Studies
Consider adding an optional minor:
- Teaching English Learners (PK-12) minor
Focus on a field that reaches the entire PK-12 school continuum.
Select one major:
- Health and Physical Education
- Music Education
- Visual Arts Education
Select to add another major or minor:
- Special Education: Cognitive Impairment
In addition, the Teaching English Learners (PK-12) minor can be added.
